Frequently Asked Questions

What do I wear?

Loose comfortable clothing such as shorts, track-suits bottoms, t-shirt.

Do I need previous experience in yoga?

It all helps –Melanie teaches yoga for beginners, from a wide range of fitness levels as well as people who have practiced Iyenger, Hatha or Sivananda yoga. Each class is tailored to the people who are present.

If you have practiced another form of yoga, you will learn how to use the breath and some short sequences when you attend the Beginners’ Course, which means that you will find it easier to develop your own practice at home and so become your own teacher.

I’m simply not flexible enough to start yoga?

That’s fine – one of the aims of the practice is to increase flexibility.

I get short of breath and have problems breathing.  This makes it difficult for me to do any exercise.

The key feature of Ashtanga Yoga is to learn to breath properly.  This practice will be perfect for you.

I have backache.  Should I do this form of yoga?

Ashtanga Yoga will strengthen your back.  However, if your backache is caused from anything other than tight muscles, Melanie is happy to have a discussion with your Osteopath or Dr to ensure that the yoga asana’s (postures) complement the treatment and advise that you have been given.
